The Wrestler

Mickey Rourke stars in the popular upcoming DVD release "The Wrestler.” The film was released to theaters at the end of 2008 and is coming to DVD on April 21, 2009. Rourke plays a professional wrestler by the name of Robin Ramzinski, but in the ring he is known as Randy "The Ram" Robinson.

Randy was a major star in the 1980s, but since then has fallen on hard times. Randy now wrestles only on the weekends for independent wrestling promotions. But after one of his shows, he is approached by a promoter who proposes to Randy the idea of a 20th anniversary rematch that would pit the Ram against his most notable opponent - Ayatollah (played by Ernest Miller.) Randy quickly accepts, remembering that the first match between himself and Ayatollah had sold out every seat in Madison Square Garden. The match is set between Randy, the wrestler who dreams of being on top again, and Ayatollah, who now owns a car dealership in Arizona.

The film details the hardships of Randy's life, showing him being locked out of his trailer for failure to pay rent, his confusing relationship with a local stripper and his excessive drug and steroid use that he maintains to kill the pain and keep him fighting fit. But after too many years of being beaten and battered, Randy suffers a heart attack after one of his matches and has to have a bypass operation done, halting any and all of his hopes of ever reaching the top again. But against all odds, as well as his doctor’s advice, Randy still feels the need to re-enter the ring this one last time.
