The Reader

“The Reader,” which is a love story/thriller, has a DVD release date set for April 14, 2009. “The Reader”was nominated for numerous Oscar awards. It was released at the box office on December 12, 2008 and runs a little over two hours. The movie stars Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes, Bruno Ganz, Alexandra Maria Lara, Linda Bassett, David Kross, Karoline Herfurth and Jeannette Hain. Kate Winslet won for the best actress category and the film was nominated for other categories including best picture.

It is a story about a teenager named Michael Berg who engages in an affair with an older, beautiful woman by the name of Hanna. The movie has a setting that takes place in post-WWII Germany. Critics have called “The Reader” one of the year’s most provocative thrillers. One reason is because Hanna disappears for about eight years and Michael finds out she is being tried for Nazi crimes.

Hanna is an older, more experienced woman who willingly gives herself over sexually to a presumptuously younger Michael, who is a virgin. The movie has received rave but mixed reviews and on some websites it received a rating of three stars out of five. Kate Winslet is very fascinating and brings life to her character like only she can. There are scenes that are very vivid in how they portray the strong and passionate love affair between both Hanna and Michael. This is a great film but is rated R due to scenes of nudity and sexuality.
