Comic book fans will be pleased to know that the movie "The Spirit" will be released on Blue-Ray and DVD on April 14, 2009. It is an adaptation of Will Eisner's comic book series with an added twist by Frank Miller. There are a number of familiar faces in the film, as Gabriel Macht takes the lead role as the hero against villains like Octopus, played by Samuel L. Jackson. Other well-known actresses, such as Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson, add to the comic's group of attractive and enticing female characters.
Despite the star-studded cast, "The Spirit" failed to rake in the ratings in theaters. In the United States it has grossed $19,781,879 since December of 2008. Internationally, the film brought in a smaller gross of $8,200,000. Some viewers and critic were uncertain about the storyline and felt disconnected from the characters. If they had never read the comic, it was hard for them to relate to the story. The addition of a Sin City-like landscape and mood felt a little awkward for a comic book hero who was originally depicted as a scruffy everyman.
However, die-hard comic book fans were generally pleased with the movie's surreal presentation. The character's appearance was meant to seem as though they jumped straight out of a comic book. So instead of giving up, the producers put together a great DVD and Blue-Ray package, which contains bonus materials, alternate endings, additional voice overs, and commentary. In addition, the Blue-Ray edition comes with a special feature which permits the viewer to find and view updated content. Watching "The Spirit" on DVD and Blue-Ray is the perfect opportunity for those who never saw it in theaters to view the movie and make their own judgments.
