DVD Bride Wars

Bride Wars will be released on DVD April 28, 2009. It is a light-hearted comedy about two best friends played by Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway. Because of some error, both of their weddings have been scheduled on the same day in the same hotel, and they must fight it out to claim the spot. Gary Winick, well known for his work in 13 Going on 30, directs the film with some support from Kate Hudson. Essentially, Bride Wars is presented as a “chick-flick” marketed to a younger, female audience who might relate to the two best friends.

The film spent about three months in theaters starting in January. It grossed a domestic total of $58,500,256. In its international showings, it pulled in about $54,125,000 making its total earnings $112,625,256. With a 30 million dollar production budget, the filmmakers made out pretty well in the end. However, 36 percent of the total earnings were made in opening weekend. After that, theater attendance dropped and the film failed to attract as many viewers.

One reason attendance dwindled may have been due to the harsh reviews the film received. Rolling Stone called the film a “chick-flick hell for guys” and suggested that it would “numb the skulls of moviegoers of all sexes and ages.” Hollywood.com only gave the movie two stars and claimed that Kate Hudson was “in serious need of a career intervention.” Even though the critics may have been rough on the film, some of the viewers had better comments. One viewer implored audiences to ignore the critics and to check it out with some girlfriends. Many still found it a lot of fun and still look forward grabbing it on DVD.
