"Defiance" on DVD

The film "Defiance" is now available on DVD. The film received rave reviews and has been listed as one of the year’s best films. The stars are Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber.

This action packed film is based on a true story about three Jewish brothers that escape Germany to fight for the Russian army during World War II. It finally leads to the brothers setting up a camp in the forest where they rescued and saved over 1,200 Jewish people. It is a very real encapsulation of the events that took place during the war, the sacrifices that people made for each other, and the risks that people were under while the Nazi’s were in control of Germany.

The movie was adapted from the book titled "Defiance," written by Nechama Tec. It was the true story of the Bielski Brothers. The film was shot on location in a remote part of the Lithuanian forest. This location was not very far from the actual location of the Bielski rescue. The depictions of the events in the movie, while made to be more dramatic and theatrical, are actually very accurate. The brothers did have to train the people how to fight in war, use weapons, and they did have to use nature for medical help. The only not accurate aspect is the use of penicillin. Penicillin was not known to Russia until after the war. In fact, it was being tested in England in 1942, with use and distribution in 1943, but to selected countries. The communist USSR was not one of the countries.
