Lately, several Hollywood producers have decided to recreate comic book stories on the big screen. One of the most recent examples is "Watchmen", based on the 1986 comic book series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The film found its way onto the big screen in March of 2009 as an action sci-fi, neo-noir superhero film directed by Zack Snyder.
"Watchmen" tells the tale of a group of vigilantes who called themselves the Minutemen and protected the world from crime in the 1930s and 1940s. Their legacy lives on through another group of masked superheroes who come together decades later and refer to themselves as the Watchmen.
The story takes place in an alternate timeline which reveals the true significance of the importance of superheroes on America’s history. Events like John F. Kennedy’s assassination and America’s victory in the Vietnam War were all somehow the result of the masked vigilantes.
The Watchmen have been retired for some time now, but are called back into action when one of their fellow group members, the Comedian, is mysteriously assassinated. Some of them believe it’s a conspiracy to wipe out the Watchmen one by one and so they attempt to get the group back together to solve the mystery.
"Watchmen" grossed $55 million on its opening weekend and over $180 million at the worldwide box office. The film will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on July 21 as an extended 3 hour film, including the director’s cut and 25 minutes of bonus footage.
