The New "Friday the 13th" on DVD

Another Hollywood remake hit the shelves recently, "Friday the 13th". The original was released in 1980. Reactions were predictable. Fans of the franchise may not have found it flawless but when you need a Jason fix you take it regardless of criticism.

While Jason can still kill time as easily as he kills kids, the series doesn't hit as hard as this genre used to hit. Between other recent remakes of classic slasher films and newer bloody franchises like "Saw," we aren't as easy to shock and disgust.

The new cast stars are Jared Padalecki and Danielle Panabaker. Jason Voorhees has returned, with his hockey mask, ready to get revenge after a conflict with a camp counselor ended with the death of his insane, axe-wielding mom who gets beheaded. Unsurprisingly, Jason now judges all counselors, and anyone near Camp Crystal Lake, guilty.

Padalecki plays Clay who is looking for Whitney (Amanda Righetti), his missing sister. Whitney went to Crystal Lake with her friends and never returned. Coincidentally, Whitney looks like Mrs. Voorhees back when she was young and attractive. Jason holds her prisoner.

Now the action becomes predictable as Jason turns others into mystery meat. In general, Jason relies on tried and true methods, in which aficionados are a bit too familiar with by now.

The original release still stands on its own. The sequels are also considered entertaining. This critic particularly enjoyed the "Freddy vs. Jason" storyline. It was a guilty pleasure watching these two go at each other with innocents on the sidelines. Contrary to what some might think, there is no question that the franchise will continue. Jason is a pop culture icon and we will see him resurrected again and again.
